Precious landscapes – formed by mankind

ZickseeSchneeberg_Klein

Due to their very particular landscape characters, Hölle, Hanság and Lange Lacke are famous and favourite attraction points for tourists and Burgenland residents alike. But most of these persons lack background knowledge about landscape development, specific flora and fauna – a fact that is also true for the the rolling hills of the Ruster Hügelland, the Siegendorfer Puszta, the Zitzmannsdorfer Meadows.

As part of a project sponsored by the Province of Burgenland and the EU, the Naturschutzbund Burgenland has compiled essential information associated with the most important cultural landscape types of the Lake Neusiedl Region and has made it available to the interested public.

14 landscapes documented

Easily understandable for laypersons and equipped with a great variety of information – that is the way how the 14 detailed descriptions of landscapes in the World Cultural Heritage and National Park Region Lake Neusiedl – Seewinkel present themselves. On eight pages each, the geographical position, development, cultural landscape, habitat types and their individual characters, typical plant and animal species as well as possible hazards are described.

Did you know for example that the Hutweiden around Lange Lacke are the only constantly grazed pastures in the Seewinkel ? Or that the two most important ’Lacken’, the shallow water pools of the ‘Hölle’ – the upper and the lower ‘Stinkersee’ – are only 2000 years old whereas Lake Neusiedl developed about 13,000 years ago? Did you know that the Hansag is the oldest part of Lake Neusiedl?
